Mass comm opportunities at Internship Fair

VCU’s Fall 2012 Career & Internship Fair, which will be held Wednesday, Oct. 3, will include several employers seeking students with advertising, public relations and journalism skills.

Companies recruiting at the fair will include the Virginia Association of Broadcasters, Royall & Co.SapientNitro and Mediabarn.

The Career & Internship Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Richmond Salons and the Commonwealth Ballroom on the second floor of the University Student Commons, 907 W. Floyd Ave.

Students will have the opportunity to interact with employers to discuss job and internship opportunities.

Students are expected to come prepared with a résumé. Professional dress is required. Registration is not required in order to attend.

To help students prepare for the internship fair, the University Career Center will hold Résumé Express workshops from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 1-2. The University Career Center is located in Room 143 on the first floor of the Student Commons.

Students bring the final draft of their résumé to have an employer provide a quick review, said Kim Hanneman, assistant director of the University Career Center and the career consultant who assist mass communications majors.

She urged students to read and apply the information in the center’s résumé writing guideline packet before attending.

Although applicants are hand-delivering the résumé to the recruiter, most recruiters use applicant tracking software back at the home office to screen out applicants, Hanneman said.
