The undergraduate advising staff in the VCU School of Mass Communications helps Mass Comm majors and minors navigate the academic programs and university requirements necessary for graduation. The VCU University College provides advising to all freshmen who declare Mass Communications; the UC is located on the Monroe Park campus on the first floor of Hibbs Hall.
For advising for the School’s graduate programs, see those pages for advertising, journalism and public relations.
The VCU Bulletin is the official source for the University’s academic regulations and degree requirements. Students are responsible for knowing and fulfilling all general and specific degree requirements as described in their bulletin. Mass Comm students also need to be familiar with the School’s academic regulations. Using the Bulletin and School’s Student Handbook, students should be able to understand and master these requirements to efficiently complete their degree.
All mass communications student beyond their freshman year should meet with either a MASC graduate assistant or peer adviser. We recommended students meet with an adviser at least once per semester until graduation. Advising is conducted on a walk-in basis only. Check this site or Facebook page for posted hours. In addition to graduate and peer advisers, MASC faculty are available as mentors to discuss various career opportunities and job placement possibilities. Advisers are for assistance only; ultimately, students are responsible for keeping track of and meeting all the requirements of the School and the University, as well as staying informed about procedural changes.
Graduate and peer advisers are on hand during the fall, spring and summer semesters to assist students with their advising needs. Advising services are located on the Monroe Park campus in Temple 2203. The Graduate Advisers are students pursuing their Master or Doctorate degrees at VCU in a MASC-related field. Peer advisers are successful MASC students, typically seniors, who can answer general advising questions.
Email the graduate assistant and peer advisers at vcumasscommadvising@gmail.com.
Natasha Long, the School’s Coordinator of Advising, oversees the advising program. She is on leave through summer 2012.
Holly Guelig, gueligha@vcu.edu, is the School’s Acting Coordinator of Advising during summer 2012. Students should contact her for seeking an override into a MASC courses (see override policy), independent studies, scheduling issues and graduation applications.
