Dr. Bill Oglesby is an assistant professor in the School of Mass Communications, concentrating in broadcast journalism. He has a strong professional background in both broadcast journalism and public relations.
Dr. Oglesby has worked as a network affiliate TV news anchor, reporter and producer in Roanoke, VA; Greenville, SC; and Richmond, where he contributed reports to ABC, NBC and CNN. His awards include an Emmy nomination from the Washington DC chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for a series called “Don’t Talk To Strangers,” Best Mini-Documentary series from the South Carolina Associated Press for “The Broken Connection,” Best Investigative Documentary from United Press International for North and South Carolina for “A Prison Without Bars,” and the Virginia Governor’s Transportation Safety Award.
He was a founder and co-owner of Richmond’s Carter Ryley Thomas Public Relations, now CRT/tanaka. There he headed the firm’s media training and video production unit, winning a Bronze Anvil and other awards from the Public Relations Society of America, the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
He holds a J.D. from Pepperdine University School of Law and a B.A. in Journalism and Communications from Washington and Lee University. Dr. Oglesby taught broadcast journalism as an adjunct at the University of Richmond from 1997-1999, and began teaching as an adjunct at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003.
He was appointed to a full-time position in 2008, while also serving as president of Bill Oglesby Media Consulting, Inc. He also serves on the boards of directors of ChildSavers, Inc., and the Richmond Broadcasters Hall of Fame. His professional affiliations include the Virginia State Bar and the Public Relations Society of America.
Dr. Oglesby is married and has two daughters, Jessica and Caroline.
